Mind map: example created with FreeMind

Mind maps aim at the visual structuring of particular associations and aspects by means of sorting. A term that serves as a starting point is written down in the middle of a large sheet of paper. Around this central term the subordinate aspects can be grouped and connected with lines. This method is well suited for hand-written and collective work.

[edit] Mind map software

The simple open source software FreeMind offers many possibilities for structuring, sorting and exporting (as SWF or PDF files). More than a being a tool for gathering ideas, it also allows for mind maps to be used in the organization of the project, as knowledge stores or for purposes of presentation.
